GeneAdviser – Spotlight

With the 7th Discovering Start-up Competition approaching in October , we’re turning the spotlight on last years winners to find out what they’ve been up to. First up, GeneAdviser:

Update provided by Co-founder and CEO, Jelena Aleksic

We have had a really intense and fantastic year at GeneAdviser since we won the 6th Discovering Start-ups competition.  We spent the end of 2015 setting up our ordering platform ( , which we launched in February with our first partner laboratory. We were pleasantly surprised to start receiving orders for genetic tests through our platform very early on, as it was essential for us to provide a service that was needed and that is truly helping clinicians in their genomic medicine needs.

A particularly special moment this past year has to be when we closed our first investment round of seed funding in June: we have been fortunate to have a fantastic group of investors and mentors which have been extremely supportive.

Robert and Jelena

Jelena Aleksic and Robert Stojnic met as Cambridge University PhD students and have joined forces to create GeneAdviser.

Another great change has been the expansion of our team in order to meet our business growth needs: we have appointed a business developer manager, and a science-medical liaison manager. We have also a remote team of developers team in Serbia which is leaded by co-founder and CTO Robert Stojnic, ensuring the technical support of the ordering platform and its growth with future business requirements.
Just five months after launch we signed a partnership with another laboratory in the UK and we have now also signed a third partner. These are excellent news for us and for patients, as the genetic testing these labs offer is first-class.
We have benefited from the rich start-up scene in Cambridge and with our proximity to London: there are plenty of initiatives to engage with mentors and advisors. There are also lots of great competitions, and together with the fantastic Discovering Start-ups competition, our efforts have been recognised at several of them: I was named as a Rising Star in BioBeat’s Movers and Shakers in BioBusiness report at the end of 2015, and then awarded the FDM Everywoman in Technology Start-up Founder Award on 23 February. I was also really excited to be recognised with the Business Weekly Woman Entrepreneur of the Year award in March.
