5 Minutes with 1248 – 6th Discovering Start-Ups Competition Finalist
1248 is a Harston based company launched in 2013 by founders with significant experience of connected platforms supporting devices in the millions (AlertMe, Amino, Antenova, Actix). Harnessing this experience they have developed a device manager that will reduce the operational costs of scaling up connected devices. Out of 80 entrants they have been shortlisted to pitch at the 6th Discovering Start Ups Competition finals at Deloitte in London on October 21.
Pilgrim Beart, CEO and serial entrepreneur shares his insights via this short Q&A;
Send us a picture of your team, your workspace or your product?
From left to right; Keith Reid (COO); Toby Jaffey (CTO); Pilgrim Beart (CEO); Rob Dobson (Chair); Devendra Kumar (Strategy Director)
What was the need you saw?
Based on our experience scaling connected products (IoT) we identified a need to automate the management of connected devices – without this, no IoT business can reach scale.
What technology innovations do you expect to see unfold going into 2016?
IoT has been held back not by lack of innovation, but by lack of interoperability. There is now a lot of convergence happening at all layers of the stack, and so we do see a market inflection happening in the next couple of years which will bring about the true IoT
Share a key lesson you have learnt over the last year?
There’s a huge appetite for IoT, but a dearth of leadership by people who actually have the experience to deliver. So it’s important for those people to step up and lead.
What’s your tip to stay informed about your industry?
There are various IoT consortia which help to educate industry and provide a focus for decision-making. Some are very focussed on a particular technical standards stack (e.g. Thread) while others are more general (HyperCat, OIC). And of course there are always upcoming IoT events in the Cambridge Wireless calendar!
