In the lead-up to the Future of Wireless Conference, CW invited young technology specialists to comment on the most significant developments in the wireless sector and technology trends which will have a disruptive impact in 2015.  Below we share some of their thoughts.

 

Wearable Technology

Why it’s disruptive – Some of the really interesting applications of wearable technology lie in the medical field.  Devices which monitor everything from heart rate to sleep patterns exist, and developments are being made for devices to automatically measure nutritional and perspiration levels.  The next step if fully integrating all of this data; not only will this be of use to doctors, but also users.  Imagine a device which will be able to provide information on the exact quantities of food to take, the amount of work needed at the gym, the amount of water to drink to awake with a clear head after a night of heavy drinking, the list goes on!  It is a given that there exists a wealth of opportunities for the applications of medical devices, but the real question is how long before the use of this technology becomes essential to the consumer?  That is only a question industry can answer. Continue reading

 

IoT

Fast-paced transformation in IoT, will definitely help push for new transformation in the UK telecommunications ecosystem.

  • In the NW infra and backhaul, to sustain the new Tput, latency, capacity requirements
  • In IT systems, to help post-process, aggregation and flexible usage
  • In RF, to resolve challenges in BW, the adoption of new frequencies and interference problems
  • In UE applications, to manage new behaviours, applications and targets for using devices
  • In the security side, due to the new need to have deeper, safer and more trustable security connection
  • The billions of devices and different targets in the market will result in greater accessibility, helping the developer side (OS) to improve usage.
  • Different user needs, mobility and different behaviors and resource use will shape new market strategies

 

Visible Light Communication – using light to transmit digital data wirelessly

Why it’s disruptive – Visible Light Communication (VLC) offers answers some of the problems/issues that is facing wireless communication:

High data capacity with high bandwidth and alleviate some spectrum scarcity issues
• If artificial light is being used, VLC can work along-side with congested Wi-Fi hotspot to provide high capacity data transmission without causing any interference to other wireless device
• The bandwidth of visible light is very large although not all frequencies are desirable

Energy efficiency; green technology (dual-purpose)
• Data transmitted along with light is very energy cost effective as energy used to modulate the data is insignificant compared to energy required by the light
• LED is the breakthrough component which offers very high energy efficiency and can be used to modulate data. Light sensitive detectors can detect these small changes in modulated data to be converted back to digital data.

Less interference to other wireless systems and equipment
• As light travels only in line-of-sight (LOS) and not through walls, its transmission is limited to a very small area rather to other rooms within the same building
• It will not disrupt any RF sensitive equipment such as in-flight, hospitals, etc.
• As light is at a very high frequency in the electromagnetic band, it is very unlikely to cause any interference to other established wireless system such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, television/radio, etc. Continue reading
